Harrison City Council’s April 7 meeting highlighted the steady work happening across the city, from supporting local students to moving key projects forward and sharing updates that impact daily life in Harrison.

American Legion Awards Scholarships and Supports the Community

The meeting opened with a presentation from American Legion Post 199 which awarded 11 scholarships of $1,000 each to local students.

In addition to the scholarships, the American Legion Post 199, also presented a $2,500 contribution to the Mayor’s Fund as part of their ongoing commitment to supporting the Harrison community.

Infrastructure and Utility Projects Move Forward

Council approved several items focused on maintaining and improving city infrastructure.

Updates to wastewater discharge limitations were approved to align with revised EPA requirements.

Council also approved a contract for the State Street siphon replacement, with the project expected to move forward in the coming weeks.

In addition, improvements were approved for the New Haven Road bridge approach. The project will address the transition onto the bridge, improving the current uneven surface.

Energy Aggregation Program Authorization

Council approved legislation allowing the City to enter into a future electric aggregation agreement if favorable rates become available.

This program gives the City the ability to secure competitive energy rates on behalf of residents, while still allowing individuals to opt out if they choose.

Community Recognition and Updates

Several updates and recognitions were shared during council reports.

Officer Ted Jaeger was recognized for his retirement after 26 years of service to the Harrison community.

Council members also highlighted another strong season of local fish fries, noting the continued support for organizations that help power many of Harrison’s community efforts.

Committee and Community Updates

Council members shared updates across several areas of city activity.

The Streets, Storm Water and Utilities Committee noted that the State Street siphon project is expected to begin later this month, along with ongoing discussions around residential parking and potential crosswalk signage improvements.

The Recreation Committee received a $2,500 contribution from the VFW to support the America 250 initiative. Council also noted strong turnout at the recent Easter event, which included approximately 6,000 eggs.

Residents are encouraged to check their mail for any updates to polling locations ahead of upcoming elections. The Charter Review Commission will also hold its next public meeting on April 15.

Economic Development Activity Continues

Council received a detailed update on ongoing development activity across the city.

At Harrison Town Center, development permits are being finalized, with most spaces currently under contract.

Additional projects continue to move forward throughout the community, including new business activity, site development near Harrison Marketplace, and progress on larger projects already underway.

The City is also expanding its business outreach efforts, with plans to connect more directly with local businesses in the coming months.

From infrastructure improvements already in motion to ongoing business activity and community partnerships, there is a lot happening beneath the surface that supports how Harrison grows and functions day to day.
