Sidewalks: Keeping Harrison’s Paths Clear for Every Neighbor

In Harrison, sidewalks are more than pavement, they connect neighbors of all ages and abilities. When Blocked, they put safety and accessibility at risk. They connect children on bikes with their friends, help parents with strollers get to the park, and allow older adults or neighbors using wheelchairs and walkers to move safely and confidently through town. Sidewalks are where community happens - and when they’re blocked, it affects all of us.

That’s why City Ordinance 351.03 prohibits parking on sidewalks including the part that runs through driveways. This ordinance protects pedestrians. When sidewalks are open, Harrison stays safe, welcoming, and true to the strong community roots that make our city special.

Why This Matters

●  Safety: Blocked sidewalks push people into streets where traffic creates real danger.

● Accessibility: For those using wheelchairs, strollers or walkers, even a short blockage can stop travel all together.

● Community Pride: Clear sidewalks keep Harrison safe, walkable, and welcoming.

Common Misconceptions

● “It’s my driveway.” → Driveways belong to you, but the sidewalk portion of your driveway is part of the public right-of-way, and belongs to the community.

● "I just need a few minutes.” → Even a short stop in the sidewalk can block safe access.

“Everyone does it.” → Most residents already keep sidewalks clear, thank you for helping us to set the example!

A Note from the Harrison Police Department

Parking can be tricky at times. Harrison also has a separate ordinance limiting parking on one side of certain streets to ensure fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles can get through. This means many residents rely on their driveways for parking, which makes it all the more important to leave sidewalks open.

Lt. Joe Ramsey of the Harrison Police Department explained:

Clear sidewalks also make it easier for our emergency crews to do their jobs and respond quickly when needed. Our officers are proud to serve all 16,000 residents, and while we respond to every call, time spent addressing sidewalk concerns could be devoted to other urgent matters. By doing your part to follow parking ordinances, you’re helping keep Harrison safe. Every effort makes a difference.

The Bigger Picture

Clear sidewalks are about more than rules. They show care for our neighbors and pride in Harrison. Harrison is a growing, family-friendly city where opportunity is growing. Something as simple as leaving the sidewalk clear is a way to show care for your neighbors and pride in your hometown.

Next time you pull into the driveway, think of your sidewalk as part of the City’s main street. When we keep sidewalks open, we’re not just following a rule, we’re keeping the connections of our community open.
