Community Spirit Shines at November City Council Meeting
The Nov. 5 Harrison City Council meeting reflected the best of the community’s giving spirit, from residents’ words of gratitude to organizations stepping up to support local causes.
Generosity in Action
The American Legion Post 199 presented several donations last night:
A $1,500 donation to the Crosby Elementary PTO to assist teachers with expenses and help fund their annual Nashville trip.
A $2,500 donation to the Harrison Fire Department to support a project sending Christmas care packages to a Harrison firefighter currently deployed overseas and his military unit (about 50 service members).
Mayor’s Community Fund: The American Legion Post 199 also presented a $2,500 monthly pledge to support the Mayor’s Community Fund, continuing their longstanding partnership to aid local families in need during the holidays.
Mayor Ryan P. Grubbs reminded residents that sign-ups for the Mayor’s Fund Christmas Toy Drive are now underway. He emphasized the importance of giving this year, noting the ongoing economic challenges many families are facing. Donation boxes will be placed at locations throughout the city, and online giving is now available through the QR code found on the Mayor's Community Fund page.
Words of Gratitude
Former City Council Member Hank Menninger offered heartfelt remarks to current Council members, recognizing their dedication and professionalism through a challenging year.
“I wanted to come to this council meeting tonight because I know this council has been through a tough year,” Menninger said. “I just wanted to stand here and say thank you. Thank you for the police protection, thank you for the fire protection. Thank you for serving our community. I applaud you for the time you give - you get paid little for what you do, and you do a remarkable job.”
City Business and Community Events
Council approved Ordinance 33-25, and the purchase of land beneath an existing City water tower, resolving a long-standing property issue.
Finally, residents are reminded that the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting will take place Saturday, Dec. 6, with lineup at 4 p.m. and parade starting at 5 p.m. For all the details about the Christmas event, visit the City website Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting. For parade applications, please click the button below or pick one up in-person at the Harrison Community Center, 300 George Street.
